THE CHURCHES

The church which is partly Norman, is dedicated to St. Lawrence. Extracts from Nicholas Pevsner:- 'Norman S Doorway with segmental arch and two outer mouldings along jambs, one a roll, the other a kind of crenellation with triangular merlons. The Chancel seems 13th Century, some renewed detail of the old chancel arch. The Nave and Aisle windows, of three lights, are different in the S from the N. Also Perpendicular, the arcade which overlaps the older chancel arch in a curious way. Perpendicular the West Tower too. Diagonal buttresses, higher stair-turret, parapet pierced with pointed quatrefoils in square panels. Pulpit is Jacobean. Plate: Chalice 1635; Salver by Abercrombie 1744; Flagon 1777. Monument re-erected in the South Porch. Sir John Newton 1568. Tomb-chest with recumbent effigy. Against the front of the chest many kneeling children (his 20 children). Eight-poster with fluted columns carrying debased Ionic capitals and a broad entablature with arabesque-work in the frieze.' The tomb of John Newton once occupied the entire east wall of the chancel, blocking the east windows, but was moved in 1883. Stocks were once sited near the stone stile leading into the churchyard.

RECTORIES

A sixteenth century Rectory (The Old Rectory) stands beside the church, and was replaced in about 1830 by the building now called The Old Vicarage actually a misnomer as it never was actually a vicarage but aonly called that because the 'Old Rectory ' name had already been taken. This was replced in its turn by the modern Rectory, a 1970s bungalow next door.

The Old Vicarage - never a Vicarage but there was already an Old Rectory when it was sold by The Church
